Basic Information

The CPS 1700 was released in 2000 replacing the CPS 1500 of the legendary 1998 line.  Thankfully, this gun is basically a CPS 1500 with a new colour scheme (which still looks cool) and pretty much identical performance.  So it is good how the CPS 1500 is basically getting produced for a little longer, which while it offered nothing new (making a gun to match the 1500 would be a pretty hard act act to follow), still made one of the best and most popular Super Soakers' made available for people to buy if they had missed out on getting a 1500 while it was out.

The Gun

The CPS 1700 is fairly big and long.  Its about the same size although not as long as other guns its size including the CPS 2000, 2500 and 2700.  The gun looked very cool and intimidating.  It looks like a medium sized rifle.  The colour is also very nice to me, dark blue and green may not be as popular as the grey and green CPS 1500 colour scheme, its still a nice colour that goes well with the gun.

The gun for a single piece blaster stores a nice amount of water.  While carrying a good amount, this gun isn't very heavy, and is very comfortable to hold in ones grasp.  Like many other blasters of its type, this gun holds about the same amount as the CPS 1500, 2000 and 2500.  It also holds a lot more water than the newer guns out today.  Some reports claimed that the plastic for the CPS 1700's reservoir was thinner and less strong, some people's even deflated.  This might be true on some models, although the model reviewed shows no signs of having weak reservoir plastic.

Like previously stated, holding this gun feels nice and comfortable, just ready to be used in a battle completely saoking someone.  It has a fairly strong build and feels as if it can take a fair few bashes.  The only problem is that the strap isn't the best on it, and can prove to be a bit uncomfortable for some.  They also aren't too strong, and can fall off in the middle of a battle.  However, it is possible to replace the strap for a more comfortable one.

The firing chamber of the CPS 1500 holds a very good amount of water at around 30oz.  Even though this is a lot, going wild on the trigger can still make its large streams drain the firing chamber pretty quickly, so be careful.  The firing chamber unleashes great power and makes great use of the water in it.

The pump on the gun, while drawing in a good amount of water, is prone to breaking if not treated properly since its not tracked.  So don't pump it wildly or leave it extended when not in use, as you trip or something then that's pretty much "snap!"  The pump draws in a good amount of water per stroke, however it still takes a fair few pumps to reach full pressure due to the large firing chamber, although thankfully its pretty much on par with guns around it like the CPS 1500, 2000, 2500, 2700, 3000 and 3200.  It is best to tilt the gun around a bit so that the water gets to the middle where it is sucked in to get the best use out of pumping when running low on water.  The pump, unlike the 1500's pump, has a release valve to prevent overpumping and risking blowing the pressure chamber and its casing, causing the gun to be pretty much useless.  The seal on the pump seems to have been made better as well, as there is no evidence of leaking, and this CPS 1700 reviewed must be about 2-3 years old.

The trigger on the gun is just normal really, easy to pull, feels strong and sturdy.  The handle around it is comfortable causing no problems or irratation on your hands after a while.

The CPS 1700 has two good nozzle settings.  5x and 10x.  It is very flexible, as you can use the 5x if your conserving shots, or 10x to cause some havoc, and yes, both of them really do the business and get you drenched.

Performance

The performance the CPS 1700 gives is very solid and consistant.  It outpowers a lot of soakers and is of the most powerful stock soakers made.  The output is very big and can instantly soak somebody in one shot.  The beam is powerful so it will give a pretty hard hit.  It has a very good range as well, just getting over 45 feet on a good shot, this gun should be feared on the field, and anyone with a smaller gun should be aware.  This makes it perfect for a long range weapon.  Its 2 powerful nozzles give the gun a good amount of flexibility while still being able to maintain good power and soakage for each.  The CPS 1700 however, unlike the 1500, when fired, the streams seem to veer to the left a bit, this has been known on most 1700's that have been reviewed on the net.  This doesn't really affect performance, as your still going to get your opponent soaked in a straight line.

Battle Endurance & Tactics

If you are good and conserving on the trigger, then this gun can last you for a long while providing a big force to be reckoned with.  However if you are too hasty and trigger happy then you'll quickly run out of water and become vulnerable, turning the whole situation around.  You have the flexibility on your side though, so unlike guns like the CPS 2000 there is more conserving settings, which means that it is much easier to control your water supply.  However, because of the firing chamber volume, your get much less shots per tank than guns like the CPS 2000, 2500, 2700, 3000 and 3200, so being conserving is a must.

If you decide upon using this weapon in a battle.  You can do a lot.  Due to the guns good feel you can dodge and be pretty agile when using it.  You can get within a good distance of your opponents while staying out of close range to avoid being open to attack, using the guns long range to its advantage.  With guns like this using tap shots are a must (unless your just playing for fun, where you can refill) to keep your pressure up on the competition.  Also, pump after each keeping your pressure chamber supply constant and not leaving it empty, thus leaving you vulnerable again while you pump to full again.  Always best to make sure that you have enough power for each shot to stay in the game.

Fighting against the CPS 1700 is quite hard, since it has probably the best balance in terms of all its features, with good shot times and power on two drenching nozzle settings which can soak and conserve, you need to have a gun like a CPS 2500 or a 2700.  They are similar in terms of power and performance.  The 2500 is more powerful and a bit more long range, although it doesn't have the balance the CPS 1700 has, nor does it have as big a firing chamber.  The 2700 holds more water, has a more flexible nozzle selection, although it is however more bulky.  The fight is quite even.  One thing of using these to your advantage though is that you get more shots per tank, so being conserving isn't as much of a problem, although you still must watch out.  If you don't have guns like these, then your either going to have use your skill more with perhaps a weaker blaster, or get some back up in.  The SC Power Pak is another option, however conserving on that gun since its quick fill device only is near impossible to compete.

Overall

The CPS 1700 is a very good soaker, and is considered one of the best (if not the best) stock soaker made due to its great balance of its features making it a very powerful weapon.  Its got great power, range and soakage that will send opponents running.  It is however affected by durability issues that hamper it from being perfect.  It is very fun to use in battles, and has a great flexibility to take on nearly any other blaster out there.  Great for entertainment too.

I highly recommend you buy one of you see it, or if you are prepared on spending a fair bit on it, its well worth it.  This gun like the 1500 is pretty much equal to it in terms of price, although a few people would probably aim more for the 1500 since its from the legendery 1998 line, although it doesn't really matter which one you get, as you'll get the same great performance.  Now go out there and start soaking!
